Competitions are not just for the designers. For programmers there are algorithm competitions and software development competitions with big prizes. And for web designers, there are competitions for development phases such as UI prototyping. Believe it or not. Every phase of a software development life-cycle, including Idea Generation and Software Testing, is a competition there at TopCoder.

What do they offer as prizes for the winners?

There are big cash prizes. That is why this post is here (indeed this post is about earning real money online!). When they post a competition, they announce the prize purse they have got for the winners. This prize purse is usually distributed among the contributors/ winners as 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and as 5 checkpoint prizes. There are many winning chances.
